Abstract Thinking Increases a Preference for “Individualizing” Over “Binding” Moral Foundations

Moral foundations theory contends that people’s morality goes beyond concerns about justice and welfare, and asserts that humans have five innate foundations of morality: harm and fairness (individualizing foundations) and in-group loyalty, deference to authority, and purity (binding foundations). The current research investigates whether people’s moral judgments are consistently informed by these five values, or whether individualizing and binding foundations might be differentially endorsed depending on individuals’ mind-sets. Results from our study demonstrated that when participants were experimentally manipulated to think abstractly (vs. concretely), which presumably makes their higher level core values salient, they increased in their valuations of the individualizing foundations and decreased in their valuations of the binding foundations. This effect was not moderated by political ideology. Implications and areas for future directions are discussed.

O pensamento abstracto é mediado na DLPFC (Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex) e parte da IAD associado à esquerda.   Haidt demonstrou que as pessoas de esquerda somente possuem predomínio de dois dos tais cinco pilares que se encontra nos humanos no planeta todo, que o estudo denomina de individualing foundations e possuem uma prevalência incrivelmente baixa dos outros pilares morais que este estudo chama de binding.  Nada de diferente do que tem lido neste blog! A razão pela qual as pessoas de esquerda revelam essa incrível característica que é imediatamente defenderem posições ético-morais que para quem os observe não aplicam de todo a si próprios está precisamente neste ponto. No primeiro tackle a qualquer questão muito rapidamente partem para o DLPFC e como tal abstraem o assunto logo reduzindo o seu âmbito relativo ao mundo real.   Este talvez seja o atributo das pessoas de esquerda que mais perturba quem não é de esquerda.

People with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex still retain the ability to consciously make moral judgments without error, but only in hypothetical situations presented to them. There is a gap in reasoning when applying the same moral principles to similar situations in their own lives. The result is that people make decisions that are inconsistent with their self professed moral values.^[3]

Esta imediata abstracção de qualquer assunto que os elementos politicamente mais à esquerda realizam é espelhado neste estudo recente de Napier.

Se eu forçar as pessoas a pensar mais abstractamente (usar a IAD?) elas vão demonstrar a tal prevalência dos dois pilares associados por haidt à esquerda. Enquanto força-las a pensar mais concretamente suscitará esses pilares mais desctritivos, esses pilares da moralidade que nos une e “bind” em suma aquilo que cria civilizações e sociedades… depois, anedoticamente, chamam-se a si próprios progressista. Injusto!
